Uterine infusions of antibiotics are performed to treat uterine infections caused by bacteria or fungus. Typically at least 3 infusions are performed to clear a mare's infection (1 per day). These can be preceded or not of uterine lavages or flushes, which entails placing one or more liters of sterile fluid into the uterus followed by its removal a few seconds later. This helps flush out of the uterus infected fluid accumulations, fluid from post-breeding reactions and left over semen or extenders to enhance the uterus health and chances of pregnancy. Many times hormones are also used to assist in the clearance process such as oxytocin for example.
