Injuries to tendons, ligaments and joints are commonly observed in equine sports medicine and often result in impaired performance. When regeneration of these injured tissues has been suboptimal and traditional therapy inefficient at inducing the desired response stem cells can be used for regeneration of new and functional tissue. Stem cells are multipotent cells that can differentiate into multiple cells types depending on where they are placed such as bone, cartilage, cardiac, nerve, muscle, blood vessels, fat, and liver tissue. Stem cell therapy seems particularly useful in certain equine deep and superficial flexor tendonitis cases (bowed tendons). This is a new cutting edge technology that has been very useful for some horses and is offered at Northwest Equine Veterinary Associates.
